History

Formed in 1999 to cater for the needs of local runners, Wadhurst Runners has grown steadily – particularly over the last couple of years - and our membership now stands at over 50.

Our first season competing in the Sussex Grand Prix saw us finish a magnificent 5th place and in the years since then we have consistently punched over our weight.

In addition to competing locally in races, members of the club have worn the Wadhurst vest with pride in competitions throughout the world including most European countries and even as far away as Thailand! Many of our runners also take part in some of the most famous running events such as the London Marathon.

However the club’s roots were born out of a desire to use running as a social form of exercise and many of our members are happy to run purely for fun without the need to compete in races.

The club is affiliated to the SEAA, Sussex County Amateur Athletic Association and the Sussex Road Racing Grand Prix. We are also affiliated to the Uplands Community Centre, in Wadhurst, which enables members to have use of changing and shower facilities both before and at the end of training runs, which start and finish at Uplands Sports Centre.

Our main source of income is the proceeds from our annual race – the Bewl 15 and we use some of this income to support local charities and good causes.

Membership

A small but enthusiastic committee keeps the club in order and one of the attractions of the club is that, whilst it is run efficiently, rules and regulations are kept to a bare minimum.

We are primarily a road running club, although some of our members also take part in both cross country and track and field events.

The club meets in the reception area at Uplands Community Leisure Centre for training runs on Tuesday evenings at 7.15 pm and on Sunday mornings at 9.00 am. Distances vary according to ability and fitness and we always ensure that runners are accompanied by colleagues – particularly during the dark winter months.

You are welcome to run with us at our sessions even if you are not a member so why not come along and then decide if Wadhurst Runners is the club for you.

'Membership is £10 per year per person, with family membership available for £20. Juniors, students and mature membership (over 60's) costs just £5 per person per year. There is a £5 joining fee in the first year.
